Notice
of Potential Safety Hazard
From the U.S. Department of Housing
and Urban Development
All
property managers need to be aware of lawsuits that have been initiated
against various manufacturers of hardboard siding products installed on
many structures built during the last two decades.
Many of these suits have been settled and property owners may be
entitled to cash recoveries amounting to thousands of dollars per
building.
The
covered materials are hardboard siding products manufactured by Georgia
Pacific, Louisiana-Pacific, Cladwood, Masonite, and several others.
Eligible properties are generally those built between 1980 and
1998. In some instances,
property owners may also recover for money expended on repair and
replacement of covered siding products.
The amount of the recovery depends on the amount of eligible
siding products used on the property, the age of the building, the
current condition of the hardboard siding, the particular style of
siding, and the average cost of labor and materials in the geographic
vicinity of the property. For
owners with major sidings problems, the awards run anywhere from $3000
to $50,000 per building.
For
those who do not feel able to handle the claim on your own, there are
several companies that will do the work and file it for you for a
percent of the recovery. They
can be found on the Internet.
